Bookfairs for Kids in Transitional Housing!
A personal library for every child

A personal library for every child
in the NY metro area
no matter their housing situation
The Bookfair Mobile believes every child should have their own personal library, a set of treasured books that can travel with them regardless of their housing situation. Even if you don't have a book shelf, you can have a mobile book bag! In a world of constant change and uncertainty, a book is a safe and comforting place (or land or world!) that every child deserves.
The Bookfair Mobile brings pop-up book fairs to family shelters in the NYC area. We provide every child with a small "My Library" tote bag to fill with the books of their choice. At our book fairs, a child chooses the books they want, making them much more likely to read them and develop a life-long love for reading!
Our gently-used books are carefully selected from local libraries and schools in order to provide high-quality and engaging literature in excellent condition to children
of all ages. Kids who develop a love for reading reap innumerable cognitive, emotional, and academic benefits that will serve them for a lifetime!
The Bookfair Mobile has served over 600 children in family and women's shelters in and around New York City including Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, Westchester, and Rockland Counties, distributing more than 5,000 books and 600 personal library bags!

Hi! I'm Emmeline. I'm the founder and director of The Bookfair Mobile. After volunteering in family shelters, I realized we were missing a way to connect the kids who needed books with the people who wanted to donate them. A lot of schools and libraries wanted to donate books but shelters often didn't have the space or budget for storage or to build the libraries they really wanted to provide. Not being able to control for the quality of the books or whether or not they would fit each child's unique interests and passions was another big challenge. And yet children in transitional housing often need literacy support more than anyone! And so it was that The Bookfair Mobile was born! A book is a gift you can open over and over again, but even better, it is a friend for life. And we could all use a friend sometimes!
We are especially grateful to The Friends of The Warner Library, The Mark Twain Library, The Berkeley Carroll School, The Pawling Free Library, The TASH Farmers Market, and The Irvington Farmers Market for their continued support in helping to provide our fairs with exceptional children's literature.
Our awesome rotating volunteer team consists of local teachers and students who love books and join us on our larger pop-up book fair days to attend to the tables and help children choose their books for their library tote bags.
Please consider donating to support our fairs.
100% of donations go directly to purchasing the My Library tote bags that each child receives for their books!
